LinkedIn Headshots vs Personal Branding Photography: What's the Difference?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether someone needs a professional headshot or a personal branding photography session.

The answer really comes down to how you plan to use your photographs.

If you need a polished, professional image for LinkedIn, your company profile, a speaker bio or professional directory, a headshot session may be all you need.

If you’re building a business or personal brand and need a wider variety of photographs for your website, social media, PR and marketing, a personal branding session gives you a much broader library of images to work with.

Here’s how to decide which is right for you.

What Is a Professional LinkedIn Headshot?

A professional headshot is primarily about you and how you present yourself professionally.

It should look polished and confident while still feeling natural and approachable. The aim isn’t to make you look overly posed or like a completely different person. A great headshot should look like you on a very good day.

Professional headshots can be used for much more than LinkedIn. My Sydney clients commonly use their photographs for:

  • LinkedIn profiles

  • Company websites and team pages

  • Speaker and conference profiles

  • Professional directories

  • Media and PR

  • Email signatures

  • Business profiles and publications

A headshot session is ideal if you need a relatively small selection of strong professional portraits rather than an entire library of marketing images.

What Is Personal Branding Photography?

Personal branding photography goes beyond the traditional headshot.

Instead of concentrating primarily on portraits, we create a varied collection of images that helps tell the story of you, your business and your brand.

That might include professional portraits, more relaxed photographs, different outfits, environmental images, working shots and images with space for website text or marketing graphics.

Personal branding photography is particularly useful for business owners, consultants, coaches, speakers, creatives and professionals who are visible within their business.

The photographs can then be used across your website, LinkedIn, social media, newsletters, presentations, PR and marketing.

Rather than trying to make one headshot work everywhere, you have a library of professional images to choose from.

Professional Headshots vs Personal Branding Photography

The easiest way to think about the difference is:

A professional headshot gives you a strong professional portrait.

Personal branding photography gives you a visual library.

If you mainly need to update LinkedIn and your professional profile, start with a headshot session.

If you regularly need photographs for your website, marketing and social media — or you are launching, repositioning or growing your business — personal branding photography will usually give you much more flexibility.

How Many Different Looks Do You Need?

This is another useful way to decide.

For professional headshots, you may only need one or two looks to give you enough variety for your professional profiles.

With personal branding photography, we can create several different looks during the same session.

Changing a jacket, shirt, accessories or the setting can completely change the feel of an image. This allows us to create photographs that can serve different purposes while still looking consistent with your overall brand.

Before a personal branding session, we can also discuss where the photographs will be used so we’re creating images with a purpose rather than simply taking lots of photographs.

What If You Don’t Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera?

This is probably more common than you think.

Many of the people I photograph tell me at the beginning of their session that they dislike having their photograph taken or that they don’t know how to pose.

You don't need to know how to pose. That's my job.

I give you clear direction throughout the session, from where to put your hands and how to position your body through to the small changes in expression that can completely change a photograph.

But I also give you space.

I don't want every movement or expression to feel forced. As you become more comfortable, we can capture the expressions and moments that actually feel like you.

It's one of my favourite parts of photographing people — seeing someone who arrived nervous gradually relax and often end up genuinely enjoying the session.

Whether we're creating one professional headshot or an entire personal branding library, that part of the experience doesn't change.

Do You Need Hair and Makeup for Professional Photos?

Professional hair and makeup can make a significant difference, particularly when you want your photographs to look polished while still natural.

The goal isn't heavy makeup or looking unlike yourself.

Good camera-ready hair and makeup is about refining the details, making sure everything photographs beautifully and helping you feel confident when you step in front of the camera.

It also means you don't need to arrive wondering whether you've done the right thing with your hair or makeup before an important shoot.

Which Photography Session Is Right for You?

Choose a professional headshot session if you primarily need:

  • A new LinkedIn profile photograph

  • An updated company or executive portrait

  • A speaker or professional profile image

  • A small selection of polished professional photographs

Consider personal branding photography if you need:

  • Images throughout your website

  • Regular content for LinkedIn and social media

  • Marketing and advertising imagery

  • PR and media photographs

  • Multiple outfits, looks or settings

  • A bank of professional content you can use over time

And if you're somewhere between the two, that's completely fine.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what type of photography you need. We can look at how you're currently presenting yourself, where you need photographs and what you're trying to achieve, and work out the right session from there.
