How Often Should You Update Your Professional Headshot?

There is no rule saying you must replace your professional headshot every year. In fact, if your photograph still looks like you and accurately reflects your current professional identity, there may be no reason to change it.

As a general guide, many professionals update their headshot every two to three years.

But the calendar is not the most important factor. The better question is: does your current photograph still represent the person someone is going to meet?

Update It When Your Appearance Has Changed

Your professional photograph does not need to document every small change in your appearance, but it should be recognisable.

If your hairstyle, hair colour, facial hair, glasses or general appearance has changed significantly, an older headshot can start to create a disconnect.

You want someone meeting you after seeing your LinkedIn profile to immediately recognise you.

Update It When Your Role Changes

A career change is one of the best times to reconsider your professional image.

Perhaps you have moved into a leadership role, changed industries, become a partner or director, started consulting, launched a business or begun speaking publicly.

The photograph that worked perfectly several years ago may no longer reflect the level or direction of your current role.

Update It When Your Brand Changes

Business owners and independent professionals may need to update photographs when their brand or target audience changes.

If you have redesigned your website, repositioned your services or changed the way you market yourself, your photography should feel consistent with that new direction.

This is where you may also discover that you need more than a single headshot and would benefit from a personal branding session.

Update It When the Photograph Looks Dated

Sometimes you have not changed very much, but the photograph has.

Photography styles, clothing, backgrounds and retouching trends change. An older headshot can begin to look dated even when you remain recognisable.

Heavy retouching, an outdated background or a crop that no longer works well on modern digital platforms can all be signs that it is time for an update.

What If You Still Love Your Current Headshot?

Keep using it.

There is no benefit in replacing a strong photograph simply because it has reached an arbitrary birthday.

If it still looks like you, suits your professional role and works well across the platforms where you need it, it is doing its job.

Should Your LinkedIn and Company Website Photos Match?

They do not necessarily need to be the exact same image, but they should feel consistent.

Using photographs from the same session can give you variety while maintaining a recognisable professional presence. For example, you might use a closer portrait for LinkedIn and a slightly wider version for a company profile or speaker bio.

This is one reason I like to create more than one expression and crop during a professional headshot session.

What About Executives and People in Public-Facing Roles?

If you are frequently speaking, appearing in media, publishing articles or representing an organisation publicly, it can make sense to update your photography more regularly.

You may also benefit from keeping a small selection of current portraits available in different orientations and crops so you are not scrambling for an appropriate image when a media or speaking opportunity arises.

Signs It's Time for a New Headshot

  • People no longer immediately recognise you from your photo

  • Your role or seniority has changed

  • You have started a new business or repositioned your brand

  • Your photograph looks noticeably dated

  • The image quality is too low for current uses

  • You only have one crop that does not work across different platforms

  • You avoid using the photograph because you no longer like how it represents you

A Professional Headshot Should Grow With Your Career

Your professional image is not about vanity. It is simply part of how you present yourself in a world where people often encounter you online before they meet you in person.

A current headshot helps create consistency between that first digital impression and the person who walks into the room.

If your existing portrait still does that, keep it. If it no longer feels like you – professionally or personally – it is probably time for a new one.

Professional Headshots in Sydney

I photograph professionals from across Sydney who need updated headshots for LinkedIn, company profiles, websites, speaker bios and personal branding.

Sessions are guided and relaxed, with direction on posing, expression and clothing so you do not need to know what to do in front of the camera.

The goal is a current professional portrait that feels polished, confident and recognisably you.
