I will often make very small adjustments rather than dramatically changing the way someone stands or sits. Those small changes can improve posture and shape while allowing the person to remain comfortable.

Your expression should suit you and the way you want to present yourself professionally. For some people that is warm and open. For others it may be calm, assured and more understated.

Many of my clients arrive nervous. Some tell me they have been dreading the shoot for weeks.

I never expect the first frame to be the final photograph.

There is value in having a little time to talk, make adjustments and get used to being in front of the camera. As the session progresses, people usually stop thinking so much about the camera. Their shoulders relax, expressions soften and the photographs begin to feel much more natural.

And quite often, the person who arrived saying they hate photos ends up enjoying the process.

What to Wear for a Natural Professional Look

Your clothing can also affect how comfortable you feel. Wear something appropriate for your profession but familiar enough that you still feel like yourself.

A perfectly tailored suit may be right for one person and completely wrong for another. Professionalism is not defined by one uniform.

Retouching Shouldn't Remove Your Personality

Over-retouching is another reason professional photographs can start to feel artificial.

My preference is polished, natural retouching. Temporary blemishes and distractions can be refined, but skin should still look like skin and you should still recognise yourself immediately.
